MRIC EMAIL SERVICES

REQUEST AN EMAIL ACCOUNT

Every subscriber can request up to 5 email accounts. To request your email accounts please email us the following information for each account you would like to have created:

  • Name of the person who will be using the account
  • Preferred user name (with one or two alternate choices) (must be 12 characters or less, case insensitive)

Once we create your account, you will receive an email with your user name, temporary password, and your email address. (Note: You will not be able to set up or use your account until we have created it and notified you).

HOW TO CHECK YOUR NEW EMAIL

You can check your mric or sugarloaf email using various email clients such as Thunderbird, Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express, or online using Webmail.

HOW TO LOG IN TO YOUR NEW EMAIL USING WEBMAIL

You can check your email online using Webmail:

Enter your user name and password. Visit the Open Webmail Tutorial page for tips on how to use Webmail.

CHANGING YOUR PASSWORD

You will receive a temporary password with your new account. Please create a new private and secure password as soon as possible following the directions below.

To change your password, log into Webmail (you cannot change the password on your Outlook or other email software client, you must use this method):

  • Visit the MRIC main webpage: www.mric.coop and click on the appropriate webmail link found on the left menu:
  • Log in using your username and temporary password.
  • The first time you log into Webmail you will see a welcome screen and be asked to set your User Preferences. Click "Continue."
  • At the top of the Preferences page, click on the "Change Password" Icon
  • Enter your old password and your new unique password and click "Change Password."

  • Your new password will now be active. Make sure to put your new password into the appropriate box in your email software program.

    • incoming server: pop3.mric.net
    • incoming server port: 110
    • outgoing server: outgoing.mric.net
    • outgoing server port: 465
  • THUNDERBIRD:
    • incoming server: pop3.mric.net
    • incoming server port: 110
    • outgoing server: outgoing.mric.net
    • outgoing server port: 587
  • for IMAPS change:
    • incoming server: imap.mric.net

HOW TO SET UP A POP3 or IMAP EMAIL CLIENT USING OUTLOOK


Most POP3/IMAP email clients are easy to configure.

Here are directions to set up your new email account using Microsoft Outlook Express.

These settings apply to all subscribers regardless of whether they use joeuser@magnoliaroad.net, joeuser@mric.net, joeuser@mric.coop, or joeuser@sugarloaf.net

Outlook Express (Click here for instructions on how to configure Thunderbird):

  • Click Tools/Accounts

  • Select the Mail tab

  • At the top right corner choose Add -> Mail

  • Enter your display name (i.e. Joe User) and click Next

  • Enter your email address joeuser@mric.coop and click Next

  • Choose POP3 or IMAP for Incoming Mail Server
  • Incoming Email Server: Choose IMAP or POP3
    • For IMAP incoming server name: imap.mric.net
    • For POP3 incoming server name: pop3.mric.net
  • Outgoing SMTP Server Name:
    • outgoing.mric.net
  • Click Next

  • Enter your Account Name and enter your password (you can choose to remember your password if you'd like).
  • Do NOT check the box next to "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)"
  • Click Next

  • Click the Finish button but you aren't quite done yet...a few more steps ahead!

    • You will be brought back to the Accounts Pop Up Window.
    • Make sure your new account is highlighted, then click on the Properties box to the right

  • Add your "Reply Address" and click the Apply button at the bottom.
  • Then click on the "Servers" tab at the top

  • The only change you need to make is to check the box next to "My server requires authentication" and click the Apply button.
  • Then click on the Settings button.

    • Leave the Settings box to its default settings as shown below.
    • If you are configuring the properties for an email account that is not hosted by MRIC, then please click the "Log on using" button and put your MRIC account name and password into the appropriate boxes. This is only necessary if your accoung name and password for your other account are different than for your MRIC account.
    • Click "OK"

  • On the Properties box, click on the Advanced tab
  • Outgoing Mail Port/Authentication:
    • Outgoing mail should be set to port 465
    • Check the box next to "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)"
  • Incoming Mail Ports/authentication:
    • If you are using POP3, the incoming mail will be on port 110.
    • If you are using IMAP, the incoming mail will be on port 143.
    • If you are using IMAPS, the incoming mail will be on port 993.
    • Do NOT check the box next to "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)"
  • Click Apply and then Click OK.

  • Close the Accounts window: you are now ready to send and receive Email.

Note: most of you will notice this warning pop up when using the new server.

Please click "Yes" in order to send your email. This notice will pop up each time you open Outlook, not each time you send an email.

  • To prevent this warning pop up, you may install the security certificate found at http://www.cacert.org/index.php?id=3.
    • Click the line "Click here if you want to import root certificate into Microsoft Internet Explorer".
    • Some users might get a pop up saying Microsoft Certificate Enrollment Control required. You will need to Run the Active X control.
    • You will then get 3 pop up confirmations asking if you really want to install the certificate. Click Yes to all 3.
    • You should get a reply that the CA cert was successfully installed.
    • You are now finished and should no longer get the warning message.
If you use another email client (such as MS Outlook, Thunderbird, or Eudora) you should be able to use the above information to configure your software.

If you still get an outgoing server error: Please turn off any AntiVirus software to test your accounts. If your accounts work when AV is disabled, please contact your AV company to ask for assistance on how to allow your AV software to work with your email client.

HOW TO CONFIGURE THUNDERBIRD

These settings apply to all subscribers regardless of whether they use joeuser@magnoliaroad.net, joeuser@mric.net, joeuser@mric.coop, or joeuser@sugarloaf.net

Open Mozilla Thunderbird, click Tools and then Account Settings:

A new Account Settings window will open. Click on "Add Account" on the bottom left:

The Account Wizard will open...choose Email Account and click Next

Enter your name and email address in the appropriate boxes and click Next:

Choose POP or IMAP (this example is for POP) and enter the appropriate Incoming Server:

  • POP Incoming Server: pop3.mric.net
  • IMAP Incoming Server: imap.mric.net

Enter the SMTP Outgoing Server: outgoing.mric.net

Click Next:

Enter the incoming and outgoing server names (incoming and outgoing names are the same for MRIC and Sugarloaf email accounts) and click Next:

Enter an account name to help you identify which Account you are using (i.e. "mric email" or simply use your email address as shown below) and click Next:

Verify that settings are correct and click Finish:

Just a few more steps to go. Back on the main Thunderbird window click Tools and Account Settings:

You will see the main Account Settings screen. Fill in the reply-to email address, then click on Server Settings on the left menu:

You are now on the Server Settings screen.

  • Check the button next to "TLS, if available"
  • Make sure the box is NOT checked next to "Use Secure Authentication"

Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) on the left hand menu.

The Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings screen will appear, Click the Edit button to the right:

A new SMTP Server window will open. Make sure the button next to "TLS, if available" is checked and click OK.

Congratulations! You are now ready to send and receive emails.

Note: The first time you use our new outgoing server, you will receive the following warning. Please choose "Accept this certificate permanently" and click OK. You will not be prompted again to accept the certificicate.

ACCESSING MRIC or SUGARLOAF EMAIL WHEN OFFNET

smtprelay.mric.net will no longer be supported. Please use the server settings above to access your mric and sugarloaf accounts whether you are on or off our network.

MRIC PERSONAL WEBSPACE

Every email account has an associated personal webpage hosted on MRIC. If your mric email address is username@mric.coop, the associated personal webpage can be viewed at http://www.mric.coop/~username Sugarloaf subscribers will find their page at http://www.sugarloaf.net/~username.

To upload content to your personal website you can use any ftp (i.e. WinSCP, FileZilla, SSH Secure Shell) program to connect to mric.coop (or sugarloaf.net). Use your user name and password to connect to the site. Make sure to double click on the /web folder before uploading your webpages.
